Six Tanzania golfers start silverware hunt in Uganda Ladies Open

Dar es Salaam. Four Tanzanian lady golfers will join Madina Iddi today in the Uganda Open Golf Championship, a prestigious 54-hole stroke play event scheduled to tee off at the Entebbe Club golf course.
The golfers are Yasmin Chali, Hawa Wanyeche, Loveness Mungure, and Neema Olomi, according to Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) Competition Secretary General Rehema Athumani.
Rehema said that Tanzania now has six golfers featuring in this renowned event in East Africa including Aalaa Somji, who featured in the 2024 Uganda Golf Club Ladies Open in Kitante and was placed eighth.
She said the golfers have trained intensively ahead of the event, which also features prominent golfers from the East African region.
“The golfers trained intensively, and we are confident they will perform well in the event.
Typically, our lady golfers excel outside the country, and we have no doubt about their abilities,” said Rehema.
Recently, Madina showcased her golfing prowess by carding a gross score of 230 (78, 76, 76) to win the 2024 Uganda Golf Club Ladies Open in Kitante.
Madina now seeks her third title on foreign soil, having also won the Zambia Ladies Open last month in Lusaka.
Madina is expected to face a strong opposition in the Entebbe event as Peace Kabasweka, who was placed second in the Uganda Golf Club Ladies Open, will be aiming to defend her title.
Also in contention is Meron Kyomugusha, who finished third in the Uganda Golf Club Ladies Open, posting a score of 237 (82, 79, 76).
“After winning the Uganda Ladies Open, I decided to stay here in Kampala instead of returning home because I have another tough assignment at the Uganda Open Golf Championship.
I expect it to be a challenging event, as I know Ugandan lady golfers and others from foreign countries are eager to win the silverware.
My goal is to achieve the same,” Madina said in a phone interview.
The champion, who currently plays off a handicap of 1.9, has had a remarkable year, having also won the Zambian Ladies Open in Lusaka.
She is determined to add another title to her collection with a strong performance at the Uganda Open.
Her confidence is bolstered by her recent success, but she remains aware of the tough competition ahead.
