What you need to know:

  • What sets this year’s championship apart is its commitment to excellence and inclusivity, drawing swimmers from various age categories

Dar es Salaam. The highly anticipated 5th edition of the High Performance Training (HPT) Mixed and Open Swimming Championships is set to make waves once again, solidifying its reputation as one of the premier swimming events in Tanzania.

The competition is scheduled to take place on October 19 at the International School of Tanganyika (IST)’s swimming pool, promising an electrifying experience for swimmers and spectators alike.

What sets this year’s championship apart is its commitment to excellence and inclusivity, drawing swimmers from various age categories who are eager to showcase their skills and push their limits.

Organized by the HPT Sports Organisation, this event offers a unique opportunity for swimmers of all ages and genders to shine and compete at the highest level.

Founded five years ago, HPT Sports Organisation is dedicated to promoting sports across Tanzania, working hand-in-hand with national associations to uplift different disciplines.

While HPT has its hands in multiple sports, swimming has remained its primary focus, with the organization investing heavily in developing and nurturing local talent. Over the years, HPT has established itself as a leader in the sport, hosting numerous training camps both locally and internationally to raise the standard of Tanzanian swimming.

What makes the HPT Championship truly special is its inclusive nature.

The event welcomes swimmers from all skill levels and backgrounds, creating a platform where everyone, regardless of gender or age, can participate and compete.

“This spirit of inclusivity has made it one of the most eagerly awaited events on the national sports calendar,” said the event manager, Francisca Binamungu.

Francisca explained that a  standout feature of the HPT Championship is the generous way it recognizes and rewards its participants in the event that has been sponsored by IST, JD Events, Pepsi and City Ambulance.

She said that every swimmer and their coach receives a special gift from the organizers, a gesture that underlines the value placed on everyone involved. But the excitement doesn’t stop there – swimmers who break the HPT time standard are rewarded with a cash prize of Sh500, 000 for each event they excel in, adding an extra layer of competition and motivation.

“The HPT Championship also shines a light on the crucial role of referees, ensuring they are given the appreciation and recognition they deserve,” she said.

Without their expertise and dedication, an event of this calibre wouldn’t be possible.

With male and female swimmers battling it out to prove their prowess, and younger swimmers eager to outshine older ones, the competition has always been fierce. This intensity has led to numerous national records being shattered since the championship's inception in 2020.

One of the most thrilling aspects of this event is that swimmers compete based purely on their timing, regardless of age, allowing for unexpected matchups and exciting races. Each swimmer is allowed to participate in a maximum of three events, all of which unfold in a single action-packed day.

The 5th HPT Mixed and Open Swimming Championship promises to be an unforgettable showcase of talent, determination, and record-breaking performances. Come and witness the excitement as Tanzanian swimmers push their limits, set new benchmarks, and create history in the pool.
