Top four teams turn focus on Community Shield matches

Dar es Salaam. After intensive training ahead of the next Mainland Tanzania and international competitions, four top teams are now focusing on the Community Shield knockout tournament scheduled to start tomorrow at the Mkwakwani Stadium in Tanga.

Yanga, who decided not to camp abroad, will open the tournament against Azam FC at 7pm and the winner will meet the winner between Singida Fountain Gate FC and Simba, who will play on Thursday at the same venue and time.

The four teams also have the task in the continental club championships. Yanga and Simba will compete in the CAF Champions League while Azam FC and Singida Fountain Gate FC will compete in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Yanga, who are defending champions, are now under new coach Miguel Gamondi from Argentina, who won the title last season after beating their rivals, Simba, 2-1.

Yanga’s goals were scored by Fiston Mayele and Pape Ousmane Sakho scored for Simba. The two players are now out of the two team’s squad after securing new teams abroad. Mayele joined Egypt’s Pyramids FC, while Sakho has joined Quevilly Rouen of France, who features in League 2. On their way to the Community Shield tournament, the Jangwani Street giants played four matches, winning three and drawing once.

Yanga won 1-0 against Kaizer Chiefs in the special encounter to unveil their squad, dubbed Mwananchi Day. Yanga also won 10-0 against Magereza FC and later 6-1 against Friends Rangers. They also recorded a barren draw against JKU of Zanzibar. Azam FC also played a series of buildup matches. They played four matches in Tunisia and managed to win two while losing the other two. The Ice-cream makers also played two matches after returning in Tanzania. They won 2-0 against Bandari Kenya and 4-0 against KMKM of Zanzibar.

On their part, Simba played three matches in Turkey where they camped. The Msimbazi Street giants managed to win two and lose one. Last Sunday, the Msimbazi Street Giants won 2-0 against Zambia’s champions, the Power Dynamos in the special occasion dubbed Simba Day.

 Singida Fountain Gate FC played various matches, including the special one against As Vita of the DR Congo, and managed to win 2-1.
