Yanga slip to a second consecutive defeat in the CAF Champions League

What you need to know:

This is the second consecutive loss for the Jangwani Street giants after a defeat by the same margin in the first match against Al Hilal Omdurman of Sudan at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s representative in the CAF Champions League, Young Africans (Yanga), continued to record poor results in the competition following a 2-0 loss to MC Alger of Algeria at the Ali La Pointe Stadium in Douera on  December 7, 2024,

This is the second consecutive loss for the Jangwani Street giants after a defeat by the same margin in the first match against Al Hilal Omdurman of Sudan at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

MC Alger’s goals were scored by Captain Ayoub Abdellaoui in the 64th minute after he out jumped Yanga's defence line to beat Diara at the far corner from Mohamed Halaimia's free-kick.

The second goal came in the dying embers of the game by Soufiane Bayazid, who scored in the 90+5 minute after he lobbed the beyond on-coming Yanga goalie to finish  following a pass from Kamel Hamidi.

The results mean Yanga remain routed the bottom of the Group A standings without a point, while MC Alger go top with four points from two matches.

Al Hilal Omdurman are second with three points, and TP Mazembe of DR Congo, who face Al Hilal Omdurman away on December 8, 2024, from 10 p.m., are third with one point.

The defeat, the second for Yanga in two weeks, has put them in a precarious position as they must win all their remaining four matches to make it to the knockout stage of the competition.

The Jangwani Street giants will swing back into action on December 14 against TP Mazembe of DR Congo in Lubumbashi and will later host TP Mazembe at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

The fixtures show that Yanga will be in action again on January 10, 2025, facing Al Hilal Omdurman away, and will later host MC Alger on January 17, at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium to complete the group stage matches.

Yanga played well in the first half and managed to stop all attacks from MC Alger players. In the first 30 minutes, Yanga opted to defend, and their tactical discipline was effective. The Jangwani Street giants opened up in the last 15 minutes of the first half and made several attacks.

Yanga’s goalkeeper, Djigui Diarra, made several saves in the first half to deny MC Alger from scoring. MC Alger started the second half with a bang and created many clear chances, but Young Africans’ defense was very keen to clear most of them.
