Bridget Chilambo is a 13 year old pupil at Braeburn International School in Arusha.There is a little doubt about her commitment to studies at one of the highend educational institutions, strictly following the international curriculum.Recently, though, she capped her classroom work with a drama, one of the annual shows.
The main character in the drama was Matilda from a children’s book authored by Ronald Dahl, now pop-ular in many schools. The play featured in the book is that of the life of little Matilda who, according to the author, is misunderstood and unappreciated by her ‘larger than life’ family.Matilda’s father, Mr. Wormwood so the play goes is a second hand car salesman who makes the mistake of conning the Russian Mafia in his sales of very old cars.One of the consequences is that his daughter, Matilda, was not impressed by the actions of her father, challenging him with a phrase; “This is not fair”.Her preoccupation with telling the truth is something her father simply can’t understand, along with her love of reading. He tries very hard to stop her from improving her education!
Although rather a ‘dark’ storyline in parts, it has a wonderfully happy ending for Matilda which leaves the audience absolutely satisfied as they leave.The production by pupils from Braeburn through this year’s pro-duction of Matilda was considered a real treat.
“Audiences in both Arusha and Dar es Salaam were blown away by the sparkling, energetic and magical musical,” said an official of the school located on the outskirts of Arusha. She added:”The musical with a majority Tanzanian cast was incredibly impressive.
Music was vibrant and the songs were memorable.“Bridget Chilambo, aged 13yrs, played the lead character of Matilda and her voice and confidence were amazing.” But the audience’s biggest reaction was to Edgar Mwashiozya, another pupil, who played the role of the evil Mrs Trunchball.
The Form VI science student-played the malevolent Head teach-er powerfully and with humour, provoking much laughter from the audience. The other comic role of Mr Worm-wood, was successfully played by Alfred Msale, a student who lives in Bagamoyo.
His engagement with the audi-ence and his ironic speeches on reading were sidesplittingly funny.
All in all dancers and entertainers stole the show with their dance moves and eye catching costumes. The pupils in the play team on tour to Nairobi, Arusha and Dar es Salaam where the final performance delighted audiences. Mrs. Alison Rogers, the head of the school reminded the audience of the power of performance based skilled in education.
“Not only do students build up their confidence in public speaking and presenting themselves pro-fessionally, but they also learned the importance of commitment, self discipline,” she said.Mike Magambo; the drama teacher and deputy head of the school pointed out; “There’s a lot of extremely talented and motivated young people in this country! I am so proud of them.
