Dar es Salaam. Tourists arriving from France outnumbered other parts of the world in the number of visitors who came to Zanzibar in July 2023, ousting Germany from the number one spot in June, the tourism statistical release shows.

The release, which was prepared in collaboration between the Chief Government Statistician, the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism, and the Immigration Department, shows that Zanzibar recorded 58,711 international visitors on July 23.

With tourism witnessing a rebound after the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of arrivals shows a 23.4 percent increase compared with 47,595 visitors recorded in the preceding month of June 2023.

The French accounted for 5,955 (10.1 percent), followed by the British with 4,710 of the total arrivals, which were mainly via the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport.

According to the report, it is an increase of 1 percent compared with 58,157 visitors recorded in July 2022 and an increase of 23.4 percent compared with 47,595 visitors recorded in the preceding month of June 2023.

Others in the top 10 arrivals include German (4,610), Italian (4,311), Polish (4,003), United States of America (3,743), Scandinavian (2,080), and South Africa (2,469), which ousted Kenya (1,541) as the top African source in that descending order.

Just like in the preceding months, tourists from Europe continued to dominate the market, accounting for 65.9 percent of the total visitors in July 2023.

The data shows that 51,834 visitors, equivalent to 88.3 percent of the total visitors, entered through Abeid Aman Karume International Airport; 49,275 of them entered by international flights, and 2,559 by domestic flights from other parts of Tanzania.

"The remaining 6,877 visitors entered through the seaport, where six of them came by cruise ship and 6,871 by sea ferries from Tanzania's mainland," reads the report.

The July statistical release also shows that 27,807 visitors (47.4 percent) were male and 30,904 (52.6 percent) were female. Males and females increased by 16.3 and 30.4, respectively, compared with the preceding month of June 2023.

The data also shows the number of visitors from emerging markets such as Poland, India, Russia, Israel, China, and Ukraine has grown by 27.7 percent compared with the visitors recorded in July 2022.
