Zanzibar Vice President urges young people to embrace change

Unguja. Zanzibar’s First Vice President, Othman Masoud Othman, has emphasised that change is an inevitable part of global struggles and that the time has come for Zanzibar to implement and witness this transformation.

Speaking at an ACT-Wazalendo Youth Conference in Kiembesamaki, Unguja, Othman, who is also the National Chairperson of ACT-Wazalendo, highlighted that the youth, including those from his party, are the beacon of change.

He underscored that their support for any movement signifies a significant hope and aligns with their needs.

“Zanzibaris, especially the youth, have awakened, and their greatest desire is not merely about the party but about the essential need to fight for the full sovereignty of their country.

I tell you, you are the ‘New Zanzibar Generation’; we assure you that we will fight to give you a nation that is developed and caring,” Mr Othman said.

He further noted that elections are a chance, a right, and the realm of citizens to complete, emphasising the importance of choosing leaders they want and using this crucial societal segment to achieve their developmental goals within their country and nation.

Mr Othman criticised the lack of long-term vision among current leaders and the negative stereotypes imposed on the youth, stating that this has led to confusion and despair within their large group.

He pointed out that many youth are struggling, finding themselves outside of employment systems, and turning to unsuitable means of livelihood.

He also mentioned that Zanzibar and Tanzania’s resources should benefit everyone, not just a few individuals who lack the courage to advocate for comprehensive reforms.

He criticised the selfishness and weaknesses of some authorities who prioritise personal interests over national development.

“Zanzibar once had development and abundant resources, making it a prime location for international trade.

However, these opportunities have been stifled due to the selfishness and weakness of some authorities who prioritise personal gains over the nation’s progress.

That’s why we have made our promise to restore a New Zanzibar, one that is unified and fully sovereign, so that everyone benefits,” Othman stressed, adding that under ACT-Wazalendo’s leadership, no one will be given a job based on their allegiance or kinship but on their merit.

Ms Esther Thomas, Deputy Secretary-General of ACT-Wazalendo for Mainland Tanzania, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to providing significant opportunities for youth at all levels and laying the foundation for them to fight for and implement decisions within the country.

Newly appointed to her position, Ms Thomas encouraged the youth to work towards leading the nation and entering the State House in the 2025 General Election.

Mr Abdulmalik Juma, chairperson of the Youth for the region, highlighted the current challenges, including the denial of their right to obtain Zanzibar Resident Identification and voting cards.

He urged the youth to vigorously defend their rights and prepare for the upcoming general election next year.

The conference, themed ‘Future and Contribution of Youth Towards the 2025 Election,’ brought together leaders from various levels across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.
