I am addicted to fiction

Tanya Mulamula

What you need to know:

They have become such a large part of her identity that not a single day will pass without her flipping through pages of a book.

Ever since she was a young girl, Tanya Mulamula had devoted much of her time to reading books.

They have become such a large part of her identity that not a single day will pass without her flipping through pages of a book.

At 27, she hasn’t put a halt on her passion as she opens up on the books she loves to read.

What do you enjoy reading?

I have fallen in love with fiction, particularly books whose plots centre on investigation and scandals.

Authors like David Baldacci and John Grisham have become my favorites. I’m really impressed with the way they write; my passion with investigative novels is attributed to their style.

Why such books?

Basically, novels that talk about scandals and investigations help you to know about many facts, and at times they leave you in suspense. I just like them.

What are you reading?

Right now, I’m reading “The Secret” and it is by Rhonda Byrne. I am also reading Blink: The Power of thinking without thinking by Malcolm Gladwell. As I had told you, I just cannot detach myself from books on investigation and scandals.

For instance, Blink, the one by Malcolm Gladwell is a must read book as it teaches us not to think too much, but think in a single blink.

How many books have you read so far?

I have read so many books; roughly they could be over 500 books. I used to read every week; indeed reading became part of me. I would not let a day pass without reading any book.

Let’s talk about your library.

Well, I have close to 50 books which vary from social , economic affairs of Africa to other human aspects that affect our daily lives.

What books would you recommend?

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne and of course Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.

They should also read Africana, a book by Kwame Anthony Appiah. They will find them interesting once they read them.

What should be done to lure people into books?

The only remedy to this is by taking children to libraries when they are still young. They should not wait until they are too grown up.

Reading clubs need to be established, this might also be of help. There is a belief that reading entails flipping through the pages of anything that is serious. There is more than that to reading; we’ve got to read anything that comes near us.
