Dar es Salaam. The National Arts Council (Basata) and the Tanzania Film Board, in collaboration with stakeholders, have announced the launch of the inaugural Tanzanian Comedy Awards, set to take place in February this year.

The awards, which are expected to be unique in the country, are in recognition of the positive impact, success, and significant contribution that comedians have made in creating employment opportunities for youth.

Speaking to The Citizen, Basata’s executive secretary, Dr Kedmon Mapana, said that these awards would leave a lasting mark in history, thanks to the concerted efforts of stakeholders in preparation for the February 14 event.

“The comedy industry continues to thrive and grow at an impressive rate. As the government, we have recognised this growth and are now committed to supporting it in a significant way. We want these awards to serve as a model,” Dr Mapana said.

He further emphasised that the winners would be awarded substantial financial prizes aimed at changing the lives of the comedians.

“We want to show those who claim that the arts don’t pay, that it’s possible to build a house and buy a car through comedy. We want the winners to be examples of success,” Dr Mapana added.

While the awards are still being finalised by the committee, Dr Mapana mentioned that there will be a comedy all-stars show leading up to the awards ceremony.

“We are still in discussions with the committee, but after the press conference, there will be a small comedy show called ‘All Stars’ in the run-up to the awards. The awards ceremony itself will feature a few selected performers who will entertain the audience,” he said.

The awards are expected to include various categories, with one being “Comedian of the Month.”

Other categories will be revealed later this week once the committee finalises their discussions.

The launch of these awards marks a significant milestone in honouring the efforts of comedians and strengthening the entertainment sector in Tanzania.
