  • Known for her gripping scripts that seamlessly blend emotion, culture, and social commentary, she has been a force to be reckoned with in the world of drama writing.

Dar es Salaam. Producer of Binti and The Christmas Run, Angela Ruhinda has made waves in the entertainment industry, securing a nomination for Best Script Writer (Drama) at Kenya’s 6th Women in Film Awards (WIFA).

Ms Ruhinda’s nomination comes as no surprise to those familiar with her work.

Known for her gripping scripts that seamlessly blend emotion, culture, and social commentary, she has been a force to be reckoned with in the world of drama writing.

Her career gained momentum in 2013 when she sold a TV pilot titled Iman & Andy to ABC, with Whoopi Goldberg attached as executive producer.

She later co-founded Black Unicorn Studios with her sister, Alinda Ruhinda. Their studio produced Binti, a Swahili drama film directed by Seko Shamte, which premiered at the Zanzibar International Film Festival in 2021.

The film achieved international acclaim, becoming the first Tanzanian movie to stream on Netflix in January 2022.

In 2024, Angela expanded her repertoire by serving as the head writer for Big Girl, Small World, a Kenyan romantic comedy series directed by Nick Mutuma and Kevin Njue.

The series, which premiered on Showmax Kenya on May 8, 2024, follows the journey of Ciku, a plus-size woman navigating life's challenges and the complexities of love. Angela led an all-female writing team, collaborating with writers such as Gathoni Kamau, Ciru Kairu, and Safina Kui, to craft a narrative that challenges stereotypes and inspires audiences.

This nomination marks a significant milestone not only for Ruhinda but also for the Tanzanian entertainment industry as a whole. It highlights the growing influence of African talent in global cinema and television, reinforcing the importance of diverse voices in storytelling.

As fans await the results of WIFA 2025, the industry celebrates her achievements and the impact of her work on the entertainment landscape.
