Directed by two of Tanzania’s renowned music video directors, Joel Malatila, aka Joma, and Kennedy Sanga, aka Kenny, the Hakuna Matata video stands as a testament to the meticulous dedication and creativity invested in its making.
Here's an inside look at what went into crafting this remarkable visual experience.
A nine-day adventure
Speaking to The Citizen, Joma described the making of the Hakuna Matata music video as an ambitious endeavour.
Unlike typical music videos shot in a single location over a few days, this project spanned nine days and took the team on a literal and metaphorical journey across Tanzania.
"We wanted to embody the essence of 'Hakuna Matata,' which translates to 'no worries,'" Joma explained.
"To achieve that, we travelled across more than four regions in Tanzania, each boasting its own unique landscape and culture. It was a challenging yet incredibly rewarding experience."
The video takes viewers on a visual tour, from Dar es Salaam to the serene beaches of Zanzibar, the Serengeti National Park in Arusha, to Kilimanjaro, and Moshi. Each location brings its own distinct flavour to the video, capturing the country's diverse beauty.
The creative process
Joma, who has an extensive background in directing music videos, stressed the importance of authenticity in Hakuna Matata.
He noted that while the song revolves around relationships—a theme familiar to many—they wanted to present a unique perspective.
"When people hear 'Hakuna Matata,' they often think of wildlife parks, lions, and other iconic images. We wanted to create something distinct that truly reflects the essence of 'Hakuna Matata,'" he said.
The directors ensured that everything, from the people featured to the landscapes and cultural elements, felt genuine to life. Their goal was to showcase the real Tanzania, capturing its essence authentically.
Overcoming challenges
One of the most significant challenges faced during the shoot was filming with lions. The animals occasionally perceived the crew's equipment as a threat, complicating the process.
However, Joma noted that everything eventually went smoothly.
"This is why we decided to collaborate with Kenny, to share responsibilities and ensure the shoot was successful," he explained.
Before the official release, the Hakuna Matata video was shared exclusively with government officials such as the President of Zanzibar, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, Tanzania’s fourth president, Jakaya Kikwete, and Prime Minister, Kassim Majaliwa.
Joma revealed that this gesture was meant to acknowledge the officials' role in facilitating the video's completion by granting necessary permits for various locations.
"The clips of Marioo presenting the project to government officials were a way to appreciate their support and showcase the successful outcome of their cooperation," Joma shared.
Hakuna Matata's music video serves as a reminder to cherish life's moments and appreciate the beauty around us, no matter where we are.
