Tanzania opens talks with Cannes film festival leadership to boost film industry participation

Cannes, France. Tanzania has begun discussions with the leadership of the Cannes Film Festival aimed at strengthening the country’s participation in the global film industry and exploring potential areas of cooperation for local film stakeholders.

The Ambassador of Tanzania to France, Mr Saidi Yakubu, held the talks on May 21, 2026 with officials of the Cannes Film Festival, including Mr François Desrousseaux, a senior official responsible for international relations and strategic partnerships, as well as Mr Guillaume Esmiol, Executive Director of the Marché du Film (Cannes Film Market).

The Marché du Film is the business arm of the Cannes Film Festival, bringing together film producers, distributors, investors, streaming platforms and content creators from more than 140 countries.

The Ambassador was accompanied by Tanzanian film producer and director Mr Jigar Ganatra, who works on wildlife, environmental and factual productions and has been involved in international productions across several countries.

The discussions focused on possible areas of increased Tanzanian participation at the festival from 2027, including the establishment of a Tanzania pavilion, participation of Tanzanian filmmakers and actors, training opportunities for young creatives, co-production arrangements, and improved access to international film markets.

Speaking after the meeting, Ambassador of Tanzania to France, Mr Saidi Yakubu, said the film industry has potential to contribute to economic growth, employment creation, tourism promotion and the country’s international visibility.

He said the embassy would continue engaging stakeholders in France and Europe to expand opportunities for Tanzanian filmmakers and content creators.

The talks form part of wider efforts by the embassy to promote cultural diplomacy and support the growth of Tanzania’s creative industries, including film, arts and tourism.
