About 571 passengers escape fatal train accident in Tanzania

Dar es Salaam. In a narrow escape from disaster, 571 passengers traveling from Kigoma to Tabora, Dodoma, Morogoro, Pwani, and Dar es Salaam have avoided fatality following a train accident on the Meter Gauge Railway (MGR).

The incident occurred on the MGR line between Kazuramimba Station and Uvinza in Kigoma.

According to a statement released by Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, the accident involved passenger train number Y14, identified by train head number 9002.

The train, comprising 12 passenger cars, one parcel car, and one brake car, derailed, leading to the disruption.

TRC’s Head of Communications Jamila Mbarouk, said six of the train cars went off the tracks, resulting in injuries to 70 people. The injured included 26 women and 44 men.

TRC, in partnership with the health authorities in Kigoma Region, has successfully transported the injured to Uvinza District Hospital. Health conditions for the passengers are reported to be improving.

The corporation has expressed its condolences to the injured and assured continued support for their recovery. No fatalities have been reported as a result of the accident.
