Moshi. One person has died in Rombo district, Kilimanjaro region after being contaminated with anthrax. The discussed contracted the infectious disease which transmitted through contact with meat from infected animal.
Four other people are receiving treatment at the Huruma hospital, the designated district medical facility in the area.
The regional medical officer Dr Mtumwa Mwako said the victim had consumed the meat on March 13th and was rushed to hospital after developing symptoms of the disease.
He called on the livestock keepers in Rombo district to take their animals for vaccination and to avoid consuming meat which has not been certified as safe by veterinary experts.
Symptoms of anthrax include bleeding profusely, abnormally high temperatures and skin rashes, he said, adding that it may take some time before the symptoms become visible.
The disease is curable if treated in early stages.
