Chadema confirms no current detentions following police confrontation in Mbeya

Mbeya. The opposition party Chadema has confirmed that no members or supporters are currently detained.

The party has also provided updates on the health of its leaders, Secretary-General John Mnyika and Nyasa Regional Chairman Joseph Mbilinyi, known as 'Sugu.'

Chadema is closely monitoring the health of its leaders and members who are still receiving medical treatment to ensure their safe recovery.

Recently, Chadema encountered a confrontation with the police over their plan to celebrate International Youth Day, organised by Bavicha –the party’s youth wing in Mbeya.

The national police intervened and banned the event, citing concerns about potential public disorder.

During the clash, several party leaders, including National Chairman Freeman Mbowe, and approximately 520 supporters were detained.

They were later released and provided with police escorts to as far as Dar es Salaam.

Speaking to The Citizen on August 15, John Mrema, the party's Director of Communication, Ideology, and External Relations, stated that there are no current reports of members or supporters being detained.

He noted that those who were previously detained have been released, and the party continues to monitor the health of its leaders and members in hospitals to ensure their recovery.

“There are no reports of anyone being detained at the moment.

Our focus is on those in hospitals to ensure they receive proper care and recover,” Mrema said.

“There are about 26 youths hospitalised at Mbeya Referral Hospital.

While Secretary-General John Mnyika’s condition is improving, Nyasa Regional Chairman Joseph Mbilinyi, 'Sugu,' is still unwell,” Mrema added
