Dar es Salaam. The Imam, who conducts prayers at the Islamic Holy Mosques in Mecca and Medina, is set to attend this year’s International Quran Awards scheduled for February in Tanzania.

Announcing the event at a press conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the Chairman of the Tanzania Holy Quran Awards, Sheikh Othman Kaporo, confirmed that the awards are set for February 23, with President Samia Suluhu Hassan expected to be the Chief Guest.

“The Imam from Mecca and Medina will attend the event as one of the invited guests. We are expecting 25 contestants from five different continents to compete for the Quran awards,” he stated.

According to the organizers, Tanzania’s largest stadium, Benjamin Mkapa, will host the annual event, with gates opening from six in the morning.

Speaking at the press conference, Works minister Abdallah Ulega commended the organizers for their dedication to the cause and for inviting President Samia to grace the event.

“Our President is a role model to many and an icon for all things religious in our country. Her participation will add value to the occasion and give people an opportunity to praise Allah as it should be,” he said.

Mr Ulega, who was the Chief Guest at the launch of this year’s awards, revealed that the government of Saudi Arabia is one of the sponsors of the event.

Sheikh Kaporo assured that this year’s event will offer more gifts and awards for participants, adding that five individuals will receive sponsorships for a holy pilgrimage to Mecca this year.
