Dar es Salaam. Outgoing Chadema Chairman Freeman Mbowe has issued two crucial directives to the newly elected leadership, emphasising unity and adherence to the party's constitution, following weeks of intense campaigns that culminated in the election of Tundu Lissu as the new chairman.
Speaking on January 22, shortly after the results were announced, Mbowe, who led the party for 21 years, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and build Chadema into a respected and visionary political force.
"I thank God for enabling me to lead this party through a transformative journey. Chadema today stands as a party of hope for all those aspiring for a better tomorrow," he said.
Reflecting on the just-concluded elections, Mbowe described them as historic and transparent. However, he acknowledged the challenges that emerged during the campaigns and urged the new leadership to address internal wounds for the sake of party unity.
Healing internal divisions
Mbowe stressed the need for reconciliation following the bruising election process, noting that some members had been deeply affected.
"The way some members and candidates conducted themselves during the campaigns has left significant scars on the party," he said.
He advised the new leadership to prioritise healing and unity, proposing the formation of a truth and reconciliation commission to mend relations among members.
"My advice to you as the incoming leaders is to heal our party. If you respect the work I have done for Chadema, act quickly to establish a truth and reconciliation commission. Let those who were hurt or wronged during the elections come together, forgive each other, and build a stronger party," Mbowe urged.
He cautioned against arrogance, calling for humility and a focus on fostering peace and collaboration within the party.
"Remember our motto: No hate, no fear. Lead with joy and peace, avoiding any sense of revenge. Let’s ensure Chadema’s image remains exemplary not only to our members but also to the nation," he emphasised.
Upholding the Constitution
Mbowe also called on the new leadership to strictly adhere to Chadema’s constitution in all their activities, warning against personal biases or emotional decisions.
"Always walk within the framework of the party’s constitution. Do not let personal interests or emotions guide you. Build this institution by following the constitution, and where there are gaps, engage others through democratic procedures to amend it," he said.
Mbowe concluded his farewell by reiterating that the victory of any candidate within the party should be seen as a collective success for Chadema. He urged the new team to work toward reinforcing the party’s unity and reputation.
The newly elected chairman, Mr Tundu Lissu, takes over at a pivotal moment, with Mbowe's parting message setting the tone for a leadership focused on reconciliation and institutional strength.
As Chadema moves forward under new stewardship, all eyes will be on how the party navigates these directives to cement its place in Tanzania’s political landscape.
