Retired Attorney General Werema dies at 69

Dar es Salaam. Retired Attorney General (AG), Judge Frederick Werema, has passed away at 69, his church confirmed.

Werema died while receiving treatment at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), on Monday December 30, 2024.

The news of his death was announced by Salome Ntaro, Secretary of the Lay Council at St Martha Parish in the Catholic Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam.

“With great sadness, I have received the news of the death of our Parish Chairman, Judge and retired Attorney General, Frederick Werema, which occurred this afternoon at Muhimbili National Hospital,” she said in the statement.

According to the statement, further arrangements were underway.

Werema, who was born in October 1955, had a distinguished career in law. Before his appointment as Attorney General in 2009, he served as a lawyer from 1984 to 2006. He also held the position of Judge in the Commercial Division of the High Court. In addition to his legal expertise, he briefly taught at Shaaban Robert Secondary School in Dar es Salaam from 1979 to 1980.

Judge Werema resigned as Attorney General in 2014 and leaves behind a legacy of service in Tanzania’s legal and judicial sectors.

Further updates on his funeral arrangements are expected in due course.
