RUWASA signs contracts worth Sh9.7 billion for projects in Tandahimba and Mtwara districts

Mtwara. The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) in Mtwara has today, October 24, 2023, signed seven contracts worth Sh9.7 billion with local contractors for projects in Tandahimba and Mtwara districts.

The projects involve the construction, renovation, and expansion of various water facilities in the two districts, with a projected completion timeline ranging from nine to 12 months.

According to the RUWASA regional manager, Primy Damas, an estimated 67,149 residents in 35 villages will directly benefit from the projects.

Once completed, the projects are expected to enhance water accessibility by 17% in Tandahimba District and by 5.8% in Mtwara District.

The projects to be implemented in Tandahimba District include the Nanyuwila water project valued at Sh6 billion and the Chitoholi water project worth Sh1.4 billion.

In addition, four projects will be implemented in Mtwara district, including the Makome and Mnyundo water projects worth Sh1 billion, along with the rehabilitation of the Mahurunga water project worth Sh803 million.

Primy noted that as of September 2023, the overall rural water accessibility in the region averaged 67%, benefiting 765,113 residents.

Out of the 720 villages served by RUWASA, 267 villages still lack access to essential water services.

For the 2023/2024 fiscal year, the agency was allocated a Sh23.4 billion budget for the completion of ongoing projects and the execution of 34 new ones.

Mtwara Regional Commissioner, Colonel Ahmed Abass Ahmed, has called upon the contractors to adhere to the agreed-upon timelines while upholding high quality standards and ensuring value for the allocated funds.

The Regional Commissioner urged community leaders and the public to actively oversee the implementation of the projects and ensure the long-term maintenance of these facilities.

Tandahimba District Commissioner, Colonel Patrick Sawala, advised the contractors against seeking extensions and encouraged them to prioritise timely project completion.

Salum Nahida, the chairman of the ruling party in Mtwara District, emphasised the importance of nationalism and patriotism in the diligent use of government funds to achieve tangible results.

A representative of Saxon Building Contractors, Hussein Ismail, expressed their commitment to implementing the projects as promised, emphasising that the guidance and support from regional leaders have provided them with the necessary direction and determination.
