Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) on Tuesday January 14, 2025 issued an update on the presence of Cyclone Dikeledi in the Indian Ocean along the Mozambique coastline.
Weather systems indicate that the cyclone is currently located along the Mozambique coastline and is expected to return to the Mozambique Channel this afternoon.
According to a statement issued by TMA, at present, the cyclone does not pose a direct threat to Tanzania.
However, due to its proximity to southern parts of the country, there is a slight possibility of brief periods of heavy rainfall in southern coastal regions, particularly in Lindi and Mtwara regions starting January 14, 2025, it added.
Additionally, strong winds and high ocean waves are expected along the entire Tanzanian coastline and nearby areas, especially on January 14 and 15.
“The authority had previously issued a warning about strong winds and high waves starting January 11, 2025, and calmer conditions are anticipated from January 16, 2025, " reads part of the statement.
TMA further urged marine users and the general public to continue following weather updates from the TMA and to seek guidance and advice from relevant experts.
Already strong winds are being experienced in Dar es Salaam and Coast Region.
In December, Tropical Cyclone Chido, was spotted in the Indian Ocean, moving towards northern Mozambique.
While the cyclone was not forecast to make direct landfall in Tanzania, its proximity to the southern region, particularly Mtwara, was warned to bring adverse weather conditions.
