Kibondo. The Energy minister, Dr Medard Kalemani, has expressed his optimism that Kigoma Region will be connected to national grid by April 2020.
Speaking at a public rally at Lugunga Village on Sunday, March 24, Dr Kalemani disclosed that the government had already set aside some Sh87 billion for the project.
“It is our expectation that by April 2020, Kigoma will be enjoying electricity from the national grid. We are also determined to ensure that by 2021 all villages in this region have access to electricity,” he said.
The minister said the government will install electricity to all houses including grass thatched ones, a move Dr Kalemani believes will help make economic activities more vibrant.
"I plead with individuals and institutions to pay their electricity bills on time to enable the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (Tanesco) to run its operations smoothly,” he said.
Dr Kalemani added that residents will be required to pay Sh27,000 for Tanesco to install electricity in their houses, stressing there will be no further charges.
A Lugunga villager, Mr Juma Jabir, thanked the government for the assurance, saying they were ready to protect infrastructure and pay their bills on time.
