Dar es Salaam. Leaders of Tanzania’s opposition party, Chadema, were released on bail last night following their arrest in connection with a planned protest that was blocked by the police.

The protest, which Chadema had announced as peaceful and scheduled for Monday, September 23, 2024, in Dar es Salaam, was disrupted by a police crackdown targeting party officials, members, supporters, and even journalists covering the event.

Chadema chairman Freeman Mbowe and vice chairman for Tanzania mainland Tundu Lissu were among those released late on Monday. Also released were Northern Zone chairman Godbless Lema and the party’s deputy secretary general for mainland, Benson Kigaila.

“They are accusing us of protesting illegally, but I refused to record any statement at the police station until they charge us in court,” said Mr Mbowe after his release. “We will meet as leaders and make the party's position on the way forward,” he added, noting that Chadema was still following up on the status of other colleagues who were arrested.

Dar es Salaam Regional Police Commander Jumanne Muliro confirmed the arrest of 14 people, including Chadema leaders, for defying the police's ban on the protest.

He accused Chadema members of making statements inciting violence and heightening public tension.

“Chadema leaders and members have been making different statements containing signs of violence and building tension among the people. Despite the police ban, some of them defied the order, leading to their arrest,” said Mr. Muliro.

However, Chadema issued a list of 53 people whom it said had been detained on Monday.

Godbless Lema, who was arrested Sunday upon his arrival in Dar es Salaam from Kilimanjaro, said, “I was arrested during my exit from the plane.”

Despite the crackdown, police maintained a heavy security presence in parts of Dar es Salaam on Tuesday, with armed officers patrolling various areas.

Mr Muliro described the heightened police activity as part of regular efforts to enhance security in the city, urging residents not to fear the police, who he said were there to protect people and their property.
