Tanzanian students win 117 medals at global event

Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian students have achieved remarkable success at the World Scholars Cup Global Round in Stockholm, collecting a total of 117 medals – 44 gold and 73 silver.
The event, which took place last week, saw 31 students from Dar es Salaam Independent School travel to Sweden on July 19 to compete alongside 600 participants from around the world.
They showcased their skills in research, public speaking, and more, returning home adorned with various medals.
With this achievement, the team has secured a place in the final round at Yale University's Tournament of Champions in the United States.
Gerson Fungo, the school's Deputy Head Teacher overseeing Admissions, Behavior, and Extracurricular activities, praised the junior teams for their outstanding performance, which collectively earned gold and silver medals.
"This remarkable success highlights the talent and preparation of our younger students, ensuring a promising future in our school's academic competitions," remarked Mr. Fungo.
He acknowledged the pivotal role played by the parents in supporting their children, providing them with the resources and encouragement necessary for success.
Mr. Fungo also recognized the school's teachers, honored as Coaches of the Year, for their exceptional guidance and support that contributed significantly to the students' achievements.
"Their dedication to nurturing young minds and instilling a passion for learning has been crucial to this year's success," he added.
Furthermore, parents' foresight in recognizing the competitive advantages of such events in university applications and future careers has proven invaluable.
Their active involvement ensured that students not only excelled academically but also gained valuable skills and experiences beneficial for their future endeavors.
The Tanzanian Board of Tourism (TTB) played a crucial role by providing extensive materials for the cultural fair at the World Scholars Cup, enhancing the students’ presentations, and showcasing Tanzanian culture globally.
Additionally, the team received warm support from the Tanzanian Ambassador to Sweden, whose encouragement and assistance were instrumental in ensuring a successful and memorable experience for the students in Stockholm.
A student Widad Khamis said “The WSC exposed me to a diverse range of subjects, from science and literature to history and social studies, sharpening my knowledge and critical thinking skills.
”She said engaging in debates, collaborative writing, and quizzes enhances my public speaking, teamwork, and analytical abilities.
Additionally, the international nature of the competition allows me to meet peers from around the world, have global perspective to ideas and intercultural understanding
“This unique experience not only boosts my academic skills but also builds confidence and prepares me for future academic and personal challenges and most importantly the job market.”
