  • Col Ilonda assured that all TPDF troops deployed in the DRC remain safe and are continuing with their peacekeeping duties as directed by SADC.

Dar es Salaam. After days of speculation, the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) has finally confirmed the deaths of two of its soldiers and injuries to four others while on a peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

In a statement released on Sunday, February 2, 2025, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for TPDF, Colonel Gaudentius Ilonda, said the casualties resulted from recent attacks by M23 rebels in the eastern DRC.

"Following consecutive attacks in the Sake and Goma areas on January 24 and 28, 2025, TPDF has lost two of its soldiers while four others sustained injuries. The injured personnel are currently receiving treatment in Goma," said Col Ilonda.

He said that preparations were underway to repatriate the bodies of the fallen soldiers while ensuring the injured receive necessary medical care.

The process is being facilitated in coordination with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat.

"May Almighty God grant our injured soldiers a speedy recovery and rest the souls of the deceased in eternal peace. Amina," the statement read.

Troops remain strong and committed

Col Ilonda assured that all TPDF troops deployed in the DRC remain safe and are continuing with their peacekeeping duties as directed by SADC.

The TPDF contingent is operating under the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMDRC), which was deployed to help stabilise the eastern part of the country, where M23 rebels have been engaged in ongoing clashes with the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC).

The peacekeeping mission remains committed to fulfilling its mandate amid escalating violence in the region.
