Dar es Salaam. The next year’s Inter- Primary (Umitashumta) and Secondary (Umiseta)School Games will also include golf.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa made the statement during the official opening of this year’s games in Tabora Region following a plea made by Culture, Arts, and Sports Minister Damas Ndumbaro.

The Umitashumta and Umiseta competitions which focus on inter-school sports activities, are pivotal events in Tanzania’s educational and sports calendar.

The competitions traditionally featuring a range of sports such as athletics, football, and netball, the inclusion of golf marks a significant expansion of the games.

PM Majaliwa acknowledged the potential of golf to contribute to the overall development of sports in the country.

He noted that introducing golf to the games would not only diversify the sports offered but also provide an opportunity to uncover and nurture new talents in golf.

“This inclusion is expected to encourage students to explore a sport that might have previously been inaccessible to them,” said Majaliwa.

He said the decision to introduce golf into these competitions aligns with broader efforts to promote sports and physical education in Tanzania.

“It reflects a commitment to broad the horizons for young athletes and giving them the opportunity to excel in a variety of sports disciplines. The move is also likely to increase the visibility and popularity of golf in Tanzania, which has traditionally been less prominent compared to other sports.

Earlier, Ndumbaro said this addition will be limited to five regions in the country that currently have golf courses.

These regions will have schools featuring in the golf competition, fostering a new generation of golfers. He highlighted the importance of golf training for teachers in these regions.

According to his plan, teachers will receive professional training from golf experts.
