Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Prisons netball team is targeting top honours in the Mainland Tanzania netball championships scheduled to start on September 4 through 15 at Mwanza’s CCM Kirumba Stadium.
The tournament was earlier scheduled to take place from August 12, featuring 20 teams from various Mainland Tanzania clubs in the country. Tanzania Prisons netball team head coach Winfrida Emmanuel said they will continue with intensive training ahead of the event and believe they will excel.
The former Uhamiaji netball team head coach said that players were responding well to training and that what she offered at Uhamijai will now happen to the Tanzania Prisons team.
“I am happy that all players are doing fine. Our target is to win the title. We expect this to be the toughest event so far because all teams are training very hard,” she said.
Meanwhile, Tanzania Amateur Netball Association (Chaneta) has said it has postponed the Mwanzatournament to allow the national team, Taifa Queens, to feature in the East Africa Championships to be staged in Bujumbura, Burundi, from August 16 to 30.
Chaneta secretary general Judith Ilunda said they were sorry for teams that were engaged in intensive training ahead of the event and called on them to prepare for a new date.
She said it was difficult to continue with preparations for the championships as most of the teams’ top players were training for national duty.
“We have decided to reschedule the league to provide ample time for our national team to train for the East Africa tournament,” Ilunda said.
