Dar es Salaam. The defending champions, Young Africans (Yanga), today face the acid test of Namungo FC in the Mainland Tanzania Premier League match at the Majaliwa Stadium in Lindi.

The match, to kick off at 6pm, is crucial for the two teams in order to improve their statuses in the league standings.

Yanga are second with 43 points from 16 matches while Namungo FC are placed seventh after collecting 23 points from 19 matches.

Azam FC are at the top with 44 points from 20 matches. Victory for Yanga will make the team regain the top position with 46 points. If the team draw against Namungo, they will also go top on goal difference.

Azam FC have managed to score 45 goals while conceding 15 to make the difference of 30 goals and Yanga have so far scored 39 goals while conceding eight to make the difference of 31 goals.

For their part, if Namungo FC win over Yanga, they will leapfrog Kinondoni Municipal Council (KMC) in the sixth position. KMC have so far collected 25 points from 20 matches.

In the first leg held at the Azam Complex, Yanga won 1-0, thanks to the goal scored by Mudhir Yahaya in stoppage time.

Records show that Yanga have won four direct matches out of nine that the two teams have played. Five matches ended in draws.

Yanga head coach Miguel Gamondi predicted a tough match, but said they would target victory after his players had trained well ahead of the encounter.

“It is going to be a tough match as we know the strength of Namungo FC in the league. Our task is to defend the title and the only thing to achieve that is to record victories,” said Gamondi.

For his part, Namungo FC head coach Mwinyi Zahera said they are facing a tough team, but added that their mission and vision is to win the encounter.

He said his players are in top form ahead of the encounter and know the strength and weakness of the Jangwani Street side.

“We managed to make our fans happy in our last match against Kagera Sugar on March 5, the task ahead is to maintain our winning streak against Yanga,” said Zahera.
