Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Mainland Premier League champions, Young Africans (Yanga), and DR Congo giants, TP Mazembe, are said to be planning a player swap deal involving Yanga attacking midfielder Kennedy Musonda and Philippe Kinzumbi of TP Mazembe.

According to information received by The Citizen, Yanga targeted Kinzumbi last season, but the deal ended in smoke due to various unavoidable reasons.

Subsequently, Yanga decided to look for another player to bolster their squad.

In addition, Yanga and TP Mazembe were in a 'registration fight' for Musonda during the mini transfer window before he (Musonda) joined Yanga in January 2023 from Power Dynamos of Zambia.

The Citizen understands that Yanga officials and TP Mazembe CEO, Frederic Kitengie, are in deep discussions on the matter.

Kitengie, who also visited Yanga to exchange experiences and strengthen the relationship, seems to agree to the move.

"Yanga have been targeting Kinzumbi for a long time, but the deal was delayed due to contract clauses.

“However, the deal is now on, and if completed, the attacking midfielder will join the Jangwani Street giants for the next Mainland Premier League season,” said a source.

The source added that the completion of the deal will benefit both sides, as the two players have been instrumental to their teams last season. Yanga’s Musonda still has a valid contract that expires in 2025.

Currently, Yanga are looking for potential players like attacking midfielders for the next season for domestic and international competitions including the CAF Champions League. The team believe Kinzumbi is the right choice.

Yanga president Hersi Said visited DR Congo to look for players and met TP Mazembe’s owner, Moise Katumbi. Apart from Kinzumbi, Yanga are reportedly eyeing other two Congolese players: Chadrack Boka of FC Lupopo and Agee Basiala of Union Maniema.

The Jangwani Street giants are also reported to have secured the signing of Yusuph Kagoma, a holding midfielder previously with Singida Fountain Gate FC.

The club is serious about player recruitment ahead of the next season, targeting a strong squad to continue shining in domestic and international competitions.

“We are looking for committed and talented players who, we believe, will take our team higher than what we have achieved this season, even though we were controversially eliminated in the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League,” said the source.
