Dar es Salaam. Mainland Tanzanian NBC Premier League top scorer Stephane Aziz Ki is now a free agent, despite promising to remain with his club, Yanga, for the next season.
Aziz Ki's contract expired on June 30, 2024, and he has yet to sign a new one. Prominent clubs in Northern Africa and Tanzania have already shown interest in signing him.
The player joined Yanga in the 2022/2023 season from Asec Mimosas of Ivory Coast, with his signing highly publicised and his introduction made at midnight.
Reports indicate that the Burkinabe attacking midfielder negotiated a deal with Yanga management and promised to sign after returning from his national team assignment.
However, he has not yet signed the contract and has promised to do so upon his return ahead of the next league season.
“It is true that Aziz Ki has not yet signed the contract with Yanga, although we have agreed on terms. We are confident he will sign after his return. We are aware that various clubs are 'hunting' for his signature,” said a source.
The source also mentioned reports that a club in Tanzania has offered Aziz Ki more than Sh700 million to secure his signature.
“In this transfer window season, you will hear lots of news concerning player registrations. Some of it is amplified to force deals to completion, but most of it remains as rumours,” he added.
Earlier Aziz Ki statement
Earlier, Aziz Ki stated that he would stay with Yanga despite being linked with many clubs on the African continent, including Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.
Football fans have speculated about his move to Mamelodi Sundowns after their coach, Rhulani Mokwena, spoke to him following the first leg at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam and the second leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.
Through his Instagram account, Aziz Ki stated that he has not yet achieved his goals with Yanga and therefore will not leave after his contract expires.
"I have no expectations of leaving Yanga at the moment because I have not achieved the goals that brought me here. This club, which I love with all my heart, still owes me, and even money cannot fill the love I have for this club," said Aziz Ki.
The player also revealed that Mokwena encouraged him to improve his playing style to achieve his best in his career.
“Rhulani told me to improve my playing, and I did it during the return leg in South Africa, where he commended me for that,” said Aziz Ki.
