Dar es Salaam. Golfer Salim Sharif emerged the overall winner of the inaugural 2023 NCBA Golf Series held at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana course on Saturday.

Sharif, who is from Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club, grossed 76 in the event that featured more than 100 golfers in the country. The event also saw Seif Mcharo placed second with 77, and Ayne Magombe emerged at the top in ladies after grossing 81.

The trio was awarded their winning prizes by Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) managing director, Bakari Machumu, in a colourful ceremony held at Dar es Salaam Gymkhana.

Machumu expressed his appreciation for all the winners and announced their participation in the NCBA Golf Series grand finale scheduled for December in Nairobi, Kenya.

He extended gratitude to the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU), the Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU), and NCBA Bank for organising this remarkable tournament.

He said the event not only promotes golf development in Tanzania but also fosters the sport in other nations where NCBA Bank has hosted tournaments.

He said that Mwananchi Communications Limited was committed to playing a pivotal role in the country's golf development.

"MCL is a leading print and digital content company in Tanzania, reaching approximately 25 million audience members monthly through our three newspapers—Mwananchi, The Citizen, and MwanaSpoti—as well as our digital platforms such as Mwananchi Digital Channel, EGazeti, Rising Woman Online, and various social media channels. These tools will amplify your brand's exposure and visibility while fostering a positive association with your target audience," he explained.

Machumu revealed that MCL has launched a special campaign called "Mzuka wa Golf" in the Mwanaspoti newspaper to spotlight the commendable efforts of TGU, TLGU, golf clubs in the country, sponsors, and players.

"Ultimately, we should unite not only to celebrate the sport of golf but also to promote Tanzania as a prime destination for international tournaments. We have an opportunity with the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in 2027, and it's a collective endeavour to promote our country's golf capabilities for international tours. That is how we intend to empower the nation through golf," he said.

The managing director of NCBA Bank Tanzania, Claver Serumaga, expressed pride in the tournament's winners and affirmed their commitment to the sport's development, particularly for junior golfers. Serumaga expressed delight at the overwhelming participation and competition in this year's NCBA Golf Series.

He stressed that the participation reflects their dedication to supporting golf's growth in the region and nurturing young talent in the sport.
