Dar es Salaam. Defending champions Young Africans (Yanga) have extended their lead in the ongoing Tanzania Mainland Premier League following 3-0 victory against Tabora United at the Ali Hassan Mwinyi Stadium today on April 2, 2025.
Yanga’s goals were scored by Israel Mwenda, Clement Mzize, and Prince Dube in a thrilling encounter that also saw the Jangwani Street giants avenge their 3-1 defeat to the “Bees” on November 7 last year at the Azam Complex.
Mwenda opened the scoring with a free kick in the 21st minute following a foul committed by Banele Junior on Yanga’s striker Prince Dube.
His shot went to the far post, leaving Tabora United goalkeeper Jean Noel hapless.
Tabora United increased the tempo after conceding, with Heritier Makambo missing a clear chance at the end of the first half. Yanga led 1-0 at the break.
The Jangwani Street giants came back stronger in the second half, adding two more goals.
Clement Mzize scored in the 56th minute following a precise pass from Pacome Zouzoua, and Dube sealed the victory in the 67th minute with another assist from Zouzoua.
The victory means Yanga now lead the league with 61 points from 23 matches, four points ahead of their bitter rivals, Simba, who are second with 57 points from 22 matches.
The league continues tomorrow on April 3, 2025 at three different venues. At Major General Isamuhyo Stadium, JKT Tanzania will host Dodoma Jiji FC from 4 pm, while KenGold FC will battle against Azam FC at Sokoine Stadium in Mbeya.
Meanwhile, Kagera Sugar will face Coastal Union at Kaitaba Stadium in the Kagera region. The matches are crucial for all six teams as they seek to improve their standings in the league.
JKT Tanzania has maintained a strong home record this season, having lost only one match—against Singida Black Stars—out of the nine games played at their venue.
JKT Tanzania, currently in sixth place with 30 points before Wednesday's matches, is targeting a victory to improve its position in the standings.
On the other hand, Dodoma Jiji FC will be seeking their first away victory of the season.
They enter this match with the bitter memory of their last league game, where they suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat against Simba.
Dodoma Jiji FC is in eighth place with 27 points, and a victory would see them level with JKT Tanzania.
At Sokoine Stadium, KenGold FC will be seeking a win against Azam FC to avoid the relegation zone. KenGold FC sits at the bottom of the standings with 16 points from 23 matches.
However, the team faces a tough challenge from Azam FC, who are third in the standings with 48 points from 23 matches.
Azam FC also aims for victory to maintain their third-place position. At Kaitaba Stadium, Kagera Sugar will also be seeking a victory against Coastal Union to avoid relegation.
Kagera Sugar is currently 14th with 19 points from 23 matches, while Coastal Union is in ninth place with 25 points from 23 matches.
