The opening group match of the CAF African Schools Football Championship produced a mouthful of goals as Fountain Gate Dodoma Secondary School of Tanzania cruised past South Africa’s Edendale Technical School with an impressive 7-1 victory at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday.

Five of Fountain Gate’s goals were scored by their dangerous attacker, Winifrida Gerald who has certainly raised her hand as one of the players to look out for in CAF’s first ever schools football competition.

The soft spoken forward, who leaves the talking to her goal scoring prowess was humble in victory, saying that all the credit must go to the entire team, as goal scoring is not a solo effort.

“I feel very happy and excited about scoring so many goals in the opening match. It is a good start for me but I believe I need to share this success with all my teammates and coaches because scoring goals is not an individual effort but a team effort” said Gerald.

Asked on the overall performance of the team and the impressive scoreline, the attacker said it was a tough match which was decided by them converting the chances that they created.

“I think the performances good, and the opponents really gave us a good run which is good for the opening match. They are a really good team, with very good individual players. I think the difference was that we converted the chances we created and were more clinical in front of goal” she added.

On the pressure of having to continue with the stellar performance, Gerald was oozing with confidence, saying that with the support and guidance of her coach, she will continue finding the back of the net.

“I don’t have pressure at all. I am confident of what my coach has told me to do. The work of the defense is to defend, and my job is to score so I am here to do what the coach and the team needs me to do”, she concluded.

The victory puts the Tanzanian side in a fairly comfortable position in the Group A with more football to be played at the King Zwelithini Stadium.
