Simba’s Egypt experience vital for CAF match, says Davids

Simba Sports Club head coach Fadlu Davids

Dar es Salaam. With Simba SC set to face Egyptian side Al Masry in the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-finals, head coach Fadlu Davids believes their pre-season training in Egypt will provide a vital advantage in the high-stakes encounter.

Simba, who topped Group A with an impressive run, will travel to Egypt for the first leg on April 2, before hosting Al Masry in Dar es Salaam on April 9.

The Tanzanian giants are eager to make history in the competition, and Davids sees their earlier experience in Egypt as a key factor in their preparations.

Familiarity with Egyptian conditions

Simba spent part of their pre-season in Egypt, where they trained in similar weather conditions, played against local teams, and adapted to the physical and tactical demands of North African football.

Davids believes this will be an advantage as they gear up for a tough battle against Al Masry.

"We know the conditions in Egypt well. We trained there, played against Egyptian teams, and experienced the climate. That will help us prepare mentally and physically for what’s ahead," he said.

Al Masry, currently in fine form in the Egyptian Premier League, will pose a formidable challenge, but Simba’s familiarity with their playing style could prove crucial.

Home advantage in the second leg

Finishing top of Group A has given Simba a strategic advantage as they will play the return leg at home, where their passionate fans are expected to create an electrifying atmosphere.

Davids believes how they play at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in the second leg could be a game-changer.

"This is why finishing top of the group was important. We play away first, assess the result, and then know exactly what we need to do at home. With our fans behind us in Dar es Salaam, we have a real advantage," he said.

Simba aiming to break quarter-final curse

Simba SC will be looking to go beyond the quarter-final stage, a hurdle they last faced in the 2021/22 season, where they were heartbreakingly eliminated by Orlando Pirates on penalties after a 1-1 aggregate draw.

That experience still lingers in the minds of players and fans, making this year’s campaign even more crucial.
