What you need to know:

  • Geay's meteoric rise is fueled by his recent silver medal triumph in the Valencia Marathon, which earned him a whopping 1,373 points and propelled him past a star-studded field of international competitors.

Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian distance runner Gabriel Geay has etched his name in the sporting history books, soaring to a remarkable ninth place in the prestigious World Athletics (WA) marathon rankings.

This prestigious accolade marks the first time a Tanzanian has cracked the top 10 for marathoners globally.

Geay's meteoric rise is fueled by his recent silver medal triumph in the Valencia Marathon, which earned him a whopping 1,373 points and propelled him past a star-studded field of international competitors.

Kenyan legend Eliud Kiptchoge, still revered as the marathon GOAT, currently sits at second with 1,488 points, while his compatriot Kelvin Kiptum leads the pack with 1,504 points.

The top five is then rounded out by Ethiopians Tamirat Tola and Tsegaye Getachew, showcasing the fierce competition Geay has navigated to secure his historic ranking.

Looking beyond marathons, Geay's outstanding performance also puts him at 95th in the combined WA rankings that encompass the entire spectrum of athletics disciplines. This impressive placement further underscores his prowess as one of the world's most elite athletes.

Elsewhere in the world rankings, Kenyan runners dominate the upper echelons, especially in the middle and long-distance categories.

However, Geay's compatriot, Alphonce Simbu, also deserves recognition for his 34th position amongst marathoners and 218th in the overall standings.

In the women's marathon rankings, another Tanzanian champion, Magdalena Shauri, was placed at 46th place.

This demonstrates the growing depth and talent within Tanzanian distance running, on both the men's and women's sides.

Geay's ascent to the world's top 10 marathoners is a landmark achievement not only for him but for all Tanzanians.

With unwavering dedication and continued brilliance, Geay and his fellow Tanzanian runners hold the promise of even greater triumphs in the years to come.
