Dar es Salaam. The defending champions, Young Africans (Yanga), are poised to leapfrog Simba to the top position as they prepare to host Kagera Sugar tomorrow at the KMC Complex in Dar es Salaam.
Yanga are currently in second place with 39 points, while Simba lead the standings with 40 points. Both teams have played 15 matches.
A victory for head coach Sead Ramović’s men at the KMC Complex will earn them two points above their arch-rivals, who will be in action the following day at the Ali Hassan Mwinyi Stadium against Tabora United.
Yanga’s manager, Walter Harrison, said all his players are in good condition ahead of the encounter and are ready to showcase their prowess.
However, Harrison said they are not expecting an easy victory, as Kagera Sugar will also be fighting for points to move away from the relegation zone.
Kagera Sugar currently sit 15th with 11 points from 15 matches. In their first-round encounter, Yanga secured a 2-0 victory.
“The match is very important, and as the defending champions, we need a win to reclaim our top position. The players are highly motivated and ready to do their best,” said Harrison.
He added that Yanga have committed players eager to showcase their talent, with their primary objective being to bag all the three points to maintain their dominance over Kagera Sugar, having had the upper hand in their previous encounters.
Records show that since 2019, the two teams have met 10 times, with Yanga having won seven matches, while Kagera Sugar one and two games ended in draws.
With such a history, Kagera Sugar will need to put in an outstanding performance to challenge Yanga, who have been in top form this season, showing consistency in their recent matches, and their fans will be hoping for another victory to solidify their push for the league title.
Meanwhile, Simba, who will be closely monitoring the result of the Yanga-Kagera Sugar match, will be aiming to maintain their lead when they take on Tabora United.
Football fans across the country will be eagerly watching these matches, as the battle for the top spot in the league intensifies.
