Yanga bolstered by return of key players ahead of MC Alger clash

What you need to know:

  • Nzengeli, an attacking midfielder, has only featured in one match—against Al Hilal Omdurman of Sudan—due to an ankle injury

Dar es Salaam. Young Africans (Yanga)’s preparations for their crucial CAF Champions League encounter against MC Alger have received a significant boost with the return of two key players, Maxi Nzengeli and Aziz Andambwile.

The Jangwani Street giants will host MC Alger this Saturday at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam at 4 pm East African time.

Nzengeli, an attacking midfielder, has only featured in one match—against Al Hilal Omdurman of Sudan—due to an ankle injury.

Andambwile, who is versatile enough to play both as a defender and a holding midfielder, sustained an injury during Yanga’s Tanzania Mainland Premier League match against Tabora United.

According to a report from Yanga, both players are now fully fit, although their inclusion in the Saturday match will depend on the decision of the technical bench, led by head coach Sead Ramovic from Germany. “The players have regained their fitness, and the technical bench will decide on their fate. The team will train today at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium after a one-day rest,” said the team’s competition chairman, Rodgers Gumbo.

However, Yanga will be without right-back Kouassi Attohoula Yao, who is sidelined with an injury. Yao is expected to return in less than six weeks. The stakes are high for Yanga, who must secure a win over MC Alger to advance to the knockout stage of the competition. Currently, Yanga sit third in Group A with seven points, trailing behind MC Alger by just one point. MC Alger, who are second with eight points, need only a draw to progress to the quarterfinals.

Group leaders Al Hilal Omdurman have already qualified with 10 points, while TP Mazembe of DR Congo, who are at the bottom with two points, will host Al Hilal in their final group stage match.

The Yanga-MC Alger clash will be officiated by Mauritanian referee Patrice Milazar, who will be assisted by James Fredrick Emile from Seychelles and Jean Marc Durou from Mauritania.

CAF’s choice of Milazar for this high-stakes encounter highlights the importance of maintaining order and discipline in what promises to be an intense match.
