Fire guts four tourist hotels in Zanzibar

Unguja. Fire destroyed some parts of four tourists’ hotels and one residential house in Paje, on Saturday Night, the district commissioner of Unguja Kusini Mr Rajab Mkasaba, confirmed on Sunday.
The hotels include Cristal Resort, Maisha Matam, Drifters, and The Nest Boutique Resort.
According to Mr Mkasaba, who is also the district chairman of the defense and security committee, the incident occurred at 6am after fire started in one of the kitchens.
He said that neither death nor injury has been reported so far, that the investigation is still ongoing, and that the fire spread to other hotels because of the wind and considering that they are roofed with coconut leaves.
Mkasaba said that citizens, in cooperation with the fire and rescue officers, managed to put out the fire without causing more harm.
"The government will ensure that security is strengthened and all essential services are available without causing trouble to visitors," he said.
Earlier, speaking to Mwananchi Digital the regional police commander, Gaudianus Kamugisha, confirmed the accident and promised to provide more information later.
"It is true that there is an incident, and I am with the defense and security committee. We are on our way to the scene of the incident. I have not yet received complete information. Officers are at the scene of the incident. I will give you more information later," he said.
