Moshi. Employees of the National Bank of Commerce (NBC) and some tourism stakeholders have embarked on a journey to climb Mount Kilimanjaro where they will install the bank’s Point of Sale (POS) machine at the peak of the Africa’s highest mountain.

The bank targets to bring banking services closer to customers and tourists visiting the mountain in the wake of growing banking technology.

The farewell event for the team took place on Saturday at the Marangu Gate as attended by the officials from the bank and Kilimanjaro National Park (Kinapa).

“We are here to witness a new era in the banking service revolution and this time with unprecedented strength, installing the first-ever payment machine POS Machine on Mount Kilimanjaro,” said Mr Masuke, adding that the initiative is part of the bank’s campaign dubbed “Tabasamu Tukupe Mashavu.”

“The journey is not just a physical feat but also a testament to the bank’s commitment to innovation and digital utilisation that we offer to customers. The six stations towards the peak of this tallest mountain in Africa represent the unique features of our POS machine which is easy, fast, secure, smart, advanced technology, and most importantly, a symbol of progress,” he added.

He said that while at the summit of the mountain, the team will unveil the lender’s POS machine to begin providing transaction services to customers through various digital payment options such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, Samsung Pay, and any bank card.

Last year, the government-owned Tanzania Telecommunication Corporation Ltd (TTCL) installed high-speed internet services on the slopes of Kilimanjaro.

Speaking about the bank’s initiative, Kinapa assistant commissioner for conservation, Ms Angela Nyaki said that the introduction of the service on the mountain will facilitate access to financial services for various stakeholders visiting the mountain.

“I congratulate NBC for recognising the importance of introducing this service globally through this famous mountain. The machine will help tourism stakeholders to carry out transactions up there...we are very grateful for the initiative,” she said.
