Two testify in gang rape case as trial continues

Dodoma. Two people have testified before the Dodoma Resident Magistrate's Court in a gang rape and sodomy case which trial is ongoing.

Last week, the court ruled that the four people who were charged in connection with the incident that caused outrage after a video showing the assault of a young woman went viral, have a case to answer, based on the evidence provided by the prosecution.

The trial for the case being held in camera, opened on Wednesday with two of the accused Clinton Damas, popularly known as Damas, and Amin Lema, also known as Kindamba, providing their defence.

Other accused in the case are Praygod Mushi and Nickson Jackson (Machuche).

Speaking to reporters outside the court on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, defence lawyer Meshack Ngamando said that Nyundo and Kindamba gave their testimonies.

He said the two had completed their defence.

"Tomorrow (Thursday), we will continue with the defence for the remaining eight witnesses, as we have 10 witnesses. If time permits, all of them will testify," he said.

Mr Ngamando said that the case would continue today Thursday September 26.

On September 23, the court ruled that all four defendants had a case to answer after the prosecution closed its case, requiring them to present their defence.

The prosecution had 18 witnesses and 12 exhibits.

The defendants were first brought to court on August 19, 2024, and charged with two counts of gang rape and sodomy involving the young woman, who is identified in court by the name XY.
