What you need to know:

  • Some listeners have praised Derulo for his smooth vocals and international appeal, seeing his contribution as a fresh enhancement to the Amapiano beat.

Dar es Salaam. The release of Diamond Platnumz’s 'Komasava' remix, featuring American pop star Jason Derulo, has set social media ablaze.

Since its debut on Friday, July 26, the remix has garnered over 2 million views on Youtube and has become a focal point for discussion.

Diverse opinions on Jason Derulo’s contribution

Jason Derulo’s inclusion in the remix has elicited a range of opinions from fans.

Some listeners have praised Derulo for his smooth vocals and international appeal, seeing his contribution as a fresh enhancement to the Amapiano beat.

One fan commented, “Jason Derulo’s voice blends perfectly with the Amapiano vibe, bringing a new international flavour.”

However, some think that Derulo’s style deviates too much from the original track’s essence.

John Newman on Instagram suggested that Derulo’s involvement altered the song’s meaning, stating, “I think Derulo just shifted its meaning and ruined it, but Diamond saved it again. The song is still good, though.”

Nick Michael added, “The song didn’t need a remix; it was fire on its own. Honestly, Jason ruined the whole song. A remix that no one asked for,”

Despite the criticisms, many fans continue to support Diamond Platnumz’s efforts to break into the American market.

Habibah Mapesa shared, “Diamond is one of the most hardworking artists in Africa. Even when Chris Brown did the Komasava challenge, people complained. I think it’s time we support our own no matter what,”

Karim Seif echoed this sentiment, calling Diamond "a national treasure."

Wakazi defends the collaboration

On the other hand, Tanzanian hip-hop artist, Wakazi has spoken out against critics of the collaboration between Diamond and Jason Derulo, arguing that the American artist’s current appeal should not overshadow the value of the collaboration.

“There was no need to criticize the feature. Collaborations aren’t about following trends or riding the coattails of a popular artist. Jason Derulo has his fan base, and not everyone who listens to him may be a fan of Diamond, and vice versa.”

He further added that what truly matters in a collaboration is the chemistry and the execution, not just the names involved.

"Someone with over 30 million Spotify listeners, and you're saying they have no impact?"

Sallam SK calls for collective recognition

In addition to the debate over Derulo’s verse, Diamond Platnumz’s manager, Sallam SK, has voiced his dissatisfaction with Director Folex’s emphasis on his role in directing the video.

This issue surfaced following Folex’s interview on Wasafi FM’s show, The Switch, on July 26, 2024, where he claimed to have spent about two weeks preparing the script and producing the original video.

Sallam SK took to Instagram to clarify the situation, emphasizing the need for collective recognition.

“It’s important that everyone receives their due credit and acknowledges the contributions of others. The Dubai desert scenes were shot by Papylion, the Paris scenes by Kevin Still, and Jason Derulo’s part by Hossam Hossainy. We were given just two days to finalize payments, locations, permits, setups, and many other details. The budget was almost fully utilized. Kudos to Folex for his participation as well,” he commented.

Marioo clarifies controversial tweet

Marioo, known for his hit Hakuna Matata, also found himself in the spotlight due to a tweet from a verified X (formerly Twitter) account bearing his name.

The tweet, which read, “Brother is just scratching the surface, but it’s all good; I’m thankful for how we’re promoting our music,” sparked controversy suggesting that Diamond might be overshadowing other artists.

Marioo later clarified on Instagram that the account was not his and that the information was false.

“Please ignore any information from the Twitter account named Tz_Marioo; it is not true, and there is no connection between me and whoever is running that account,” he stated.

Chley’s Appreciation

Amidst the mixed reactions, South African artist Chley, who is featured on the song, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Diamond Platnumz.

“I’m so grateful for this year and what it’s about to bring! A big shoutout to my Big Brother Diamond Platnumz. It’s incredible how I’ve received love and respect from you. Thank you for believing in me and supporting me through this journey. Despite the challenges of travel and jet lag, we keep pushing forward. I’m thankful to God for bringing us together to create magic,” she shared.

Diamond Platnumz’s Komasava remix continues to stir conversations, reflecting the evolving landscape of global music collaborations and the complexities of blending diverse musical styles.
