That is set to change with the inaugural Tanzania Comedy Awards 2025, a groundbreaking event scheduled for February 14, where comedians will take centre stage.
For the first time, the nation will celebrate the men and women who have made us laugh, think, and connect. The awards will feature 17 categories, with winners walking away with significant cash prizes.
The ‘Comedian of the Year’ will receive a whopping Sh30 million, while the ‘Best Male Comedian’ and ‘Best Female Comedian’ will each take home Sh20 million
.Additionally, winners in the remaining categories will be awarded Sh5 million each.
This unprecedented acknowledgement not only highlights the importance of comedy but also provides much-needed support to those who keep the nation entertained.
Speaking about the significance of the awards, Deputy Minister for Culture, Arts, and Sports, Hamis Mwinjuma, popularly known as Mwana FA, described the initiative as a transformative moment for the comedy industry.
“There has never been a platform that rewards comedians. It is time for us, as a government, to recognise our comedians. They deserve to be honoured for the great work they are doing,” he says.
While celebrating contemporary comedians, the awards will also pay tribute to the trailblazers who paved the way for today’s stars.Among those to be honoured is the late King Majuto, whose unmatched comedic genius transcended generations.
His contributions continue to inspire fans and aspiring comedians alike, solidifying his place as a legend in Tanzanian entertainment history.
“Better late than never; we want to celebrate them,” adds Mwana FA, emphasising the importance of honouring icons like the late King Majuto.
The awards will serve as a tribute to these legends, ensuring their legacies are preserved for future generations.

The Tanzania Comedy Awards 2024/25 are scheduled to take place on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2025.
