Mbeya. Police in Mbeya Region have granted bail to Chadema leaders, including National Chairman Freeman Mbowe, along with cadres and supporters, following interrogations.

According to Police Force Commissioner for Operations and Training Awadhi Haji, the opposition figures were released on the night of August 12, 2024.

Mr Haji said that about 520 opposition leaders, members, and supporters had been detained, allegedly for planning to engage in restricted political activities.

While many were bailed, some detainees remain in custody, unable to meet bail requirements and facing multiple criminal charges.

Mr Haji emphasised that law enforcement would not hesitate to take stern measures against anyone violating the country's laws and regulations.

“About 375 people were arrested on Sunday, August 11, 2024, including 261 men and 114 women. 145 others, including 112 men and 33 women, were arrested on Monday, August 12," he said.

Mr Haji said the party’s senior leaders were among those arrested in the Kadege area for defying and violating orders to suspend their journey to Mbeya for a planned indoor meeting.

“They include Vice Chairman Tundu Lissu, Secretary-General John Mnyika, Nyasa Zone Chairman Joseph Mbilinyi alias Sugu, and Youth Wing (Bavicha) Vice Chairperson Moza Ally and her publicity secretary Twaha Mwaipaya,” he said.

Mr Haji confirmed the arrest of 145 supporters, including Chairman Freeman Mbowe and Bavicha Chairman John Pambalu, at Songwe Airport as they arrived for a prohibited conference, bringing the total number of arrested politicians to 520.

All suspects were interrogated and returned to their respective locations under police escort, with those from Mbeya Region being granted bail.

According to Mr Haji, the Police Force is committed to maintaining security and order in Mbeya City and other areas of the country showing signs of unrest, with ongoing monitoring of any plans to disrupt peace.

Commissioner Haji warned that any individual or group found guilty of disturbing the peace would face serious consequences, regardless of their position or status.

"The Police Force urges political leaders and their supporters to adhere to the laws and regulations of the country and will take strict legal action against any person or group involved in disturbing the peace," said the Commander.

Chadema senior leaders have declined to comment on the latest developments.
