Public servants to work from home on January 27 and 28 due to Africa Energy Summit

What you need to know:

  • Nine major roads in Dar es Salaam will be temporarily closed from January 25 to January 30, 2025, to facilitate the arrival and movement of dignitaries.

Dar es Salaam: Public servants in Dar es Salaam will work from home on January 27 and 28, 2025, following a government directive aimed at easing disruptions caused by road closures for the Africa Energy Summit.

However, the directive does not apply to essential service workers, including those in security, health, and transportation sectors, whose duties require their physical presence at workstations.

The announcement was made on January 26, 2025, by Chief Secretary Dr Moses Kusiluka. It aims to address potential challenges arising from the closure of major roads due to the summit.

"To avoid inconvenience caused by the road closures, the government directs that on January 27 and 28, 2025, public servants in the Dar es Salaam region work from home, except for those whose duties require their presence, such as security and defence personnel, healthcare workers, and transport staff," Dr Kusiluka stated.

Private sector employers in Dar es Salaam are encouraged to allow their employees to work from home or adopt measures to minimise transport challenges caused by road closures.

The summit, scheduled for January 27–28, 2025, will bring together 24 African presidents, representatives from 21 other African nations, heads of international organisations such as the World Bank and the African Development Bank, and over 2,600 participants.

Nine major roads in Dar es Salaam will be temporarily closed from January 25 to January 30, 2025, to facilitate the arrival and movement of dignitaries.

Affected roads include:

  • Nyerere Road: From Julius Nyerere International Airport to the city centre.
  • Sokoine, Kivukoni, and Lithuli Roads: From Gerezani traffic lights to hotels and the State House.
  • Ohio Road: From Kivukoni to Serena Hotel.
  • Ghana Road: From Ohio Road to Onomo Hotel.
  • Bibi Titi Road: From Ohio and Ally Hassan Mwinyi intersection to Crown Plaza Hotel.
  • Azikiwe Road: Leading to hotels such as Four Points and Golden Tulip.
  • Morogoro Road: From Sokoine to Tiffany No. 1 Hotel.
  • Makunganya Road: From Azikiwe to Tiffany No. 2 Hotel.
  • Garden Road: From Lithuli to Southern Sun Hotel and Julius Nyerere International Conference Centre.

Additionally, tricycles (bajajis) and motorcycles (bodabodas) will not be allowed to access the city centre during the summit.

The government has assured the public that banks, businesses, markets, hotels, and restaurants will remain open during this period.

"Banks will not close, and business at the Kariakoo Market will proceed as normal. Hotels and restaurants will also remain open," Dr Kusiluka added.

This high-profile event is jointly organised by the government of Tanzania, the World Bank, and the African Development Bank. It seeks to foster energy-related partnerships across the continent.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan will preside over the gathering, which is expected to bring significant global attention to Tanzania.
