Moshi. Unidentified individuals have stolen more than 140 poles and fencing wires from Moshi Airport in Kilimanjaro Region, raising concerns over security at the facility.
Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner Nurdin Babu disclosed the incident during a Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Regional Executive Council meeting in Moshi.
The meeting aimed to review the implementation of the party’s election manifesto.
Mr Babu revealed that the government had allocated Sh12.5 billion for the renovation of Moshi Airport, with Sh4 billion specifically designated for fencing.
However, before the contractor could complete the work, 140 poles and sections of fencing wire were stolen.
“We are refurbishing the Moshi Airport, and the government has allocated Sh12.5 billion. Out of that, Sh4 billion is meant for the construction of the airport fence. The contractor has not yet completed the work, but already 140 poles have been stolen, and the fencing wire has been cut,” he stated.
Mr Babu condemned the act, noting that those responsible are fellow Tanzanians who disregard government investments. He issued a directive for the immediate return of the stolen poles and restoration of the damaged fencing wire before the contractor proceeds with the work.
As of now, no suspects have been arrested in connection with the theft, but investigations are ongoing.
In a related development, Mr Babu emphasised that the government continues to take action against officials hindering the implementation of the CCM’s election manifesto through corruption and mismanagement of public resources.
The contractor responsible for the Moshi Airport project, Rocktronic Ltd, has already reported the incident to the police for further investigation and legal procedures.
During the meeting, CCM National Executive Committee (NEC) member Seleman Mfinanga commended the government’s efforts in implementing various projects in the region. He noted that such progress strengthens the party’s position ahead of the upcoming general elections.
Mr Mfinanga, who chaired the meeting, acknowledged the substantial work done by the government but urged officials to ensure all pending projects are completed on time.
“There are projects that are yet to be completed, and some are near completion. I urge MPs and district directors to oversee these projects and ensure they are finalised promptly. I also urge directors to utilise allocated funds for their intended projects because when funds are returned, it becomes difficult to secure them again,” Mr Mfinanga said.
With investigations ongoing, authorities hope to recover the stolen materials and ensure the renovation of Moshi Airport proceeds without further setbacks.
