Dar es Salaam. Amani Simbayao, an officer with the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), who was among three officers attacked by residents in Tegeta, Dar es Salaam, while attempting to seize a vehicle suspected of being smuggled into the country, has died.

The news of his death was confirmed, in a public statement released by TRA on its social media channels.

"The Board of Directors, Management, and Employees of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) express their sorrow and offer condolences to the family, relatives, and friends following the death of our colleague, Amani Kamguna Simbayao. He passed away today, December 6, 2024, at Muhimbili National Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment after he was attacked while on duty in the Tegeta for Ndevu area in Dar es Salaam."

The statement continued: "We expect all those responsible to be brought to justice."

The attack on Simbayao and his two colleagues occurred on the night of December 5, 2024, while they were in a government vehicle.

Following the incident, Jumanne Muliro, the Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander, warned against citizens taking the law into their own hands.

"Citizens will get into trouble. They must stop taking the law into their own hands," he said in an interview with Mwananchi.

Earlier in the day, TRA explained that the incident occurred while the officers were performing their duties to control smuggling and illegal vehicle imports.
