VIDEO: 24/7 operations at Tanzania's busiest market Kariakoo off to a slow start as shops close

Dar es Salaam. Despite the much-anticipated launch of 24-hour business operations in Kariakoo, the reality on the ground seems different, at least on day one.

On Tuesday night, Congo Street in the heart of Kariakoo paints a picture of silence, with various businesses and shops closed before dawn. Just a day ago, the area was set to embrace round-the-clock operations, marking a new era for commerce in Dar es Salaam.

The 24-hour business initiative was launched on Monday night by Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila, who assured traders and shoppers of their safety while issuing a stern warning to criminals against using the area for illegal activities.

However, despite these assurances, the scene at Congo Street suggests that traders may still have reservations.
