Unguja. The Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Zanzibar presidential candidate, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has called for peaceful, issue-based campaigns ahead of the October General Election, urging supporters to shun divisive politics and personal attacks.

Speaking on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Mousetoung Grounds in Unguja after collecting his nomination forms from the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC), Dr Mwinyi said CCM would lead by example through a civilised campaign focused on unity and development.

“There is nothing more important than preaching and preserving peace in our country,” he told party cadres, members and supporters at the rally.

“We must avoid hate, discriminatory, divisive, and abusive politics. Instead, we should promote ourselves through our policies and achievements we have brought to our people,” he added.

Dr Mwinyi, who is seeking re-election for a second term, said CCM would not tolerate personal attacks or inflammatory rhetoric, emphasising that the party’s priority was to serve Zanzibaris through clear plans and promises.

“Let us not focus on individuals. Let us explain what we are going to deliver to the people. I am confident that with this approach, Zanzibaris will place their trust in us,” he said.

He pledged to run a campaign unlike any previously seen in the Isles, one marked by discipline, dignity and a strong emphasis on peace.

Calling for unity within CCM, Dr Mwinyi urged party members to put aside any lingering differences from internal nomination processes and focus on winning all elective positions.

These include the Union presidency, parliamentary, councillor and House of Representatives seats.

“The most important thing now is to turn out in large numbers on October 29, 2025, and vote for CCM. That’s the only way to guarantee a resounding victory,” he said, noting that the party’s manifesto had been widely implemented during his current term.

While refraining from delivering a full campaign speech prior to the official launch period, Dr Mwinyi touched briefly on three key points, expressing gratitude to God, acknowledging the support of the CCM national chairperson and Union President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and thanking party organs for endorsing his candidacy.

He expressed appreciation to the CCM Central Committee (CC), the National Executive Council (NEC), and the General Congress for nominating him to contest the presidency once again.

He also thanked supporters for braving the rain to accompany him to the ZEC headquarters and then to the rally at Mousetoung Grounds.

“I am greatly encouraged by your presence. It gives me confidence that we are on course for a decisive victory. I also thank all those who contributed financially towards my nomination process,” Dr Mwinyi said.

He singled out several groups for their support, including Zanzibar secondary school teachers, teachers from Pemba, members of the CCM Women’s Wing (UWT), motorcycle and tricycle riders from both Unguja and Pemba, retired NEC members, and Pemba CCM elders.

Looking ahead to the campaign period, Dr Mwinyi told supporters that the official 45-day campaign window would be an opportunity to present CCM’s achievements, outline the party’s vision for the future, and continue promoting national unity and peace.

Earlier in the day, Dr Mwinyi arrived at the ZEC headquarters in the Kilimani Chini area to collect his nomination forms.

He arrived at approximately 10:45 am and was handed the documents by ZEC Chairman, Mr Thabit Idarous Faina.

Although he did not address the media at the ZEC premises, he took photographs with party officials and supporters before heading to the rally, where he later delivered his brief remarks.

Among those accompanying him was the Second Vice President of Zanzibar, Hemed Suleiman Abdullah.

Despite a brief but heavy downpour that lasted between 20 and 30 minutes after collecting the documents, CCM supporters filled the ZEC area, which was adorned in the party’s official green and yellow colours.

Following the form collection, Dr Mwinyi visited CCM's Kisiwandui headquarters in Zanzibar, where he led party members in prayers at the gravesite of the late Abeid Amani Karume, the founding father of the nation and its first president.

According to ZEC’s election calendar, all candidates collecting nomination forms must return them no later than 4pm on September 10, 2025, when the official nomination process concludes. Campaigning is set to begin on 11 September.

As preparations intensify in Zanzibar, the Union-level electoral process, overseen by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has entered the third day of campaigning. This covers the Union presidency, Members of Parliament and local councillors.

The party’s union presidential candidate Samia Suluhu Hassan and her running mate, Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi, continued with their campaigns on Friday in Morogoro and Mwanza respectively.

Meanwhile, opposition candidates continue to finalise their campaign logistics ahead of their respective launches.
