Unguja. Zanzibar’s President, Dr Hussein Mwinyi, has called for the continued preservation of peace as the country approaches the General Election scheduled for October this year.

Speaking at the Idd-ul-Fitr held at the Ziwani Police grounds in Unguja on March 31, 2025, Dr Mwinyi urged citizens of all faiths to pray for the nation, ensuring a smooth and peaceful electoral process

The event, which followed Idd-ul-Fitr prayers, was attended by Islamic faithful, current and former national leaders.

“We pray to Almighty God to sustain our unity and cooperation for the benefit and well-being of our nation. May He help us navigate this period safely while maintaining our togetherness for the good of both present and future generations,” said Dr Mwinyi.

The President underscored the importance of upholding the values of Ramadan, particularly acts of kindness and support for those in need.

He highlighted the significance of zakat (almsgiving) and sadaqah (charity), noting that such practices purify the giver’s soul, promote compassion, and foster social unity.

“These acts eliminate envy and hatred while strengthening solidarity and economic stability in our communities. Such values are crucial for our society’s progress,” he said.

Dr Mwinyi also commended non-Muslims for their support and cooperation during Ramadan, stating that religious tolerance remains a cornerstone of Zanzibar’s social harmony.

To ensure safe Idd celebrations, he called on authorities to enhance security in public gathering areas and on the roads, stressing the need to prevent avoidable accidents.

“During festivities, roads experience increased traffic, leading to unexpected accidents. It is crucial to enforce traffic laws to avoid such incidents. Additionally, we must safeguard our children and the general public from any actions that may disrupt peace and joy during the celebrations,” he stated.

Islamic scholar Ustadh Muhamed Suleiman Zuberi, quoting the Quran, emphasized that national unity among leaders is essential for the country’s stability.

“Listening to our leaders is an act of worship. When peace prevails, people can carry out their daily activities without disruption, the economy thrives, and development is achieved,” he said.

The event was graced by key leaders, including First Vice President Othman Masoud, Second Vice President Hemed Suleiman Abdulla, Speaker of the House of Representatives Zubeir Maulid, and Zanzibar’s Chief Justice Khamis Ramadhan Abdalla. Also in attendance were former Presidents Amani Abeid Karume (Sixth Phase) and Dr Ali Mohamed Shein (Seventh Phase), alongside a former Second Vice President.
