New era for bus tickets as Latra enforces system integration

Magufuli Bus Terminal in Dar es Salaam

What you need to know:

  • Mr Pazzy said operators may use their own systems if they meet regulatory requirements or may partner with Latra-certified providers.

Dar es Salaam. The Land Transport Regulatory Authority (Latra) is today expected to release a list of online ticketing service providers that have successfully integrated their systems with government platforms.

Those who have not met the integration requirements will no longer be permitted to operate.

The move follows a two-month notice issued by Latra requiring all online ticketing firms to connect to the Latra Travel Ticketing System and the Tanzania Revenue Authority’s Electronic Fiscal Device Management System (EFDMS) by July 1, 2025. Latra’s head of Public Relations and Communications, Mr Salum Pazzy, said a team of experts is finalising the verification of compliant providers.

“Buses will continue to operate as usual, but from today we will publish a list of authorised service providers. This list will be shared with transport operators, and only recognised companies will be allowed to offer online ticketing services,” he said.

According to Mr Pazzy, only a few providers have completed registration and system integration so far.

He said the enforcement is part of ongoing implementation of the 2024 Latra Electronic Ticketing Regulations, published in Government Gazette No. 20 of January 12, 2024.

The initiative aims to strengthen the management of the land transport sector, increase transparency in revenue collection, and improve service quality for passengers.

Mr Pazzy said operators may use their own systems if they meet regulatory requirements or may partner with Latra-certified providers.

He also noted that Latra, in collaboration with the Police Force’s Road Safety Division, will continue nationwide inspections to ensure compliance with licensing, safety, luggage labelling, and mandatory online ticketing.

Currently registered service providers include Logix Company Ltd, Itule Company Ltd, Busbora Company Ltd, Duarani Innovate Ltd, Web Corporation Tanzania Ltd, Hashtech Tanzania Ltd, Otapp Agency Company Ltd, Sepa Tech Ltd, Iyishe Company Ltd (Adventure Connection), Global Light and Company Ltd, Mkombozi Infotech Company Ltd, Meerkatz (Kidia One), Abood Bus Services, Borita Company Ltd, and Exabytes Africa Ltd.
