Dar es Salaam. A total of 12 upcountry buses have been forced to suspend their journeys today following inspections carried out by traffic police officers.
The buses, which were bound to upcountry regions, were found with technical issues including lacking requisite spare parts.
Speaking today, August 6, to journalists during a road safety training, Superintendent of Police Abel Swai said the buses will not be allowed to provide transport services until when the owners repair them fully.
Mr Swai said the major challenge facing the upcountry buses is lack of fully placed ball joints.
He added that the police officers were inspecting the vehicles with a view to curbing accidents.
“The inspection is being carried out in accordance with the road safety act, which highlights areas that should not have any issues. If found to have any, the vehicles will be forced to cancel the journey and go for maintenance,” he said.
Ubungo Bus Terminal Road Safety Squad inspector Ibrahim Samwix said their decision to order suspension of the busses journeys was in line with the Surface and marine Transport
Regulatory Authority (Sumatra) regulations.
“In view of this, we are giving them only two hours to have completed the exercise otherwise they will have to use other busses to transport their passengers,” he stressed.
He said the biggest challenge facing the transport sector is that there were many upcountry bus owners with only a few transporters.
